The word Periodontal literally means “around the tooth”. A dental condition associated with gums and the bone of the teeth comes under Periodontal disease and is tackled through Periodontal surgeries.
If you have Periodontal disease, your symptoms are :
- gums that are swollen, red, or bleeding.
- deep pockets that form between your gums and teeth.
- loose teeth.
- pain when chewing.
- bad breath.
We generally would not recommend a surgery unless the disease is in an advanced stage and would recommend conservative approaches. Our team will tell you if you could benefit from a Periodontal surgery.
Good oral hygiene, a balanced diet, and regular dental visits can help you reduce the risk of developing a Periodontal disease.
Surgical Procedure
A Periodontist will perform the surgery. There are various options available and the dentist will determine which option will be suitable for your specific condition.
Flap surgery
With this procedure, surgeons will make small cuts in your gum and lift a section of tissue back. They remove tartar and bacteria from your tooth and from under your gums. The gums are then sutured back, so the tissue fits firmly around your teeth.
Bone grafting
If the gum disease has damaged your tooth bone, then it has to be replaced with a graft. The bone graft can be made from small parts of your own bone or a synthetic bone, or donated bone. This procedure helps prevent tooth loss and helps promote natural bone regrowth
